On Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “No Church in the Wild,” the kick drum loop receives some added thump that gives it more bass presence, while its attack gets enough high-mid presence to retain its punchiness. This is a sculpted sound signature that changes a bit depending on the volume level, but it's always balanced. The acoustic strums are bright and clear, as are the higher-register percussive hits. The drums on this track get some added low-frequency heft without ever sounding unnatural or overly boosted. This track, even at top volumes, sounds excellent-Callahan’s vocals get a rich low-mid lacquer to complement his baritone delivery without smothering it, while the high-mids and highs remain crisp and defined.
This is a bass-forward sound signature, but the deep bass sounds fuller at volume levels below max.īill Callahan’s “Drover,” a track with far less deep bass in the mix, gives us a better sense of the Beosound A1’s general sound signature. At moderate to high volumes, the bass is more full-the DSP (digital signal processing) definitely starts to thin things out at top volume levels, but this is in the name of avoiding distortion, and audio never actually sound truly thin. On tracks with intense sub-bass content, like The Knife’s “Silent Shout,” the Beosound A1 delivers impressive bass depth-the kind that will rattle the surfaces it’s placed on (while the speaker itself manages to stay perfectly still).

The speaker is compatible with Bluetooth 5.1 and supports both AAC and AptX (Adaptive) codecs, which is somewhat rare in this category.īang & Olufsen estimates battery life to be roughly 18 hours, but your results will vary with your volume levels.

You can pause and play audio in the app, as well as download firmware updates. It’s less intuitive than simple bands would have been, but there’s at least the option to adjust the audio. You can create your own EQ, but instead of the familiar bands and sliders we usually see, this is a circular chart you drag your finger through to make the audio brighter or more bass-heavy. In the B&O app, you can also access various listening modes, which are basically just EQ presets. Alexa can then be accessed by pushing the microphone button on the speaker. That said, once you set up your account, the app will connect with the Amazon Alexa app to complete the setup process. I’m always frustrated by any product that provides an app you can only use after supplying private information. The Bang & Olufsen app is essential for setting up Alexa, which makes it all the more annoying that you must create an account with B&O-or log in via Apple, Facebook, or Google-in order to access the account.
The 6 in the rating means the speaker is dust-tight, and no solids can enter its enclosure-this is a little surprising given the uncovered USB-C charging port, but we’ll take B&O’s word here. While Bluetooth signal doesn’t do well underwater, you can rinse the speaker off under a faucet or expose it to rain or poolside splashes without issue. The Beosound A1’s impressive IP67 rating indicates the speaker is fully waterproof-the 7 in the rating means it can be submerged up to a meter safely. A brown leather lanyard is attached to the side panel, a nice organic touch, with a metallic cinch bearing the Bang & Olufsen logo. The top panel is populated by tiny circular speaker grille perforations, one of which is inhabited by a small status LED. Its 5.2-by-1.8-inch footprint (HW) is impressively compact given how loud it can get, but it does pack some weight (1.2 pounds).

Perhaps it feels a little overpriced for a mono model, but there’s little else to complain about here-this is still the portable speaker to beat when style, an outdoor-friendly build, and audio performance are all equally important, earning it our Editors' Choice. There are also improvements to audio performance and battery life, with Amazon Alexa support added for good measure. The new $250 Bang & Olufsen Beosound A1 (2nd Gen) continues in the footsteps of the previous model, but it's fully waterproof (not to mention dustproof). We see our fair share of outdoor-friendly Bluetooth speakers, and most tend to be built like tanks.
